The countdown to Starfield’s release on Sept. 6 is well underway, and fans are eagerly anticipating what the latest offering from Bethesda has in store for them. With this being one of the company’s biggest launches in recent years, it’s no surprise that Bethesda is looking to up the ante with a few extra features. But could one of those features be a multiplayer mode?
According to recent reports, Bethesda Game Studios is on the lookout for a new developer with experience in creating “high-quality open world level content,” and an “extensive knowledge of various open world multiplayer games.” This has naturally led to speculation that Starfield could be in line for a full online mode.
THE SEARCH FOR AN ASSOCIATE LEVEL DESIGNER
The job listing, which was posted on Bethesda’s website, is for an Associate Level Designer, and the successful applicant will be expected to work closely with the Lead Level Designer and the rest of the team to create high-quality content for the game. The job listing goes on to state that the applicant should have experience with open world games, and specifically, open world multiplayer games.
While the job listing doesn’t mention Starfield by name, it’s easy to connect the dots and assume that the successful applicant will be working on content for the game. Given that Bethesda has a long history of creating massive, open world games, it’s not surprising that they would be looking for someone with experience in this area.
NOT FOR ELDER SCROLLS OR FALLOUT 76
It’s worth noting that the job listing is specifically for Bethesda Game Studios, and not for ZeniMax Online Studios (who handle The Elder Scrolls Online) or Bethesda Austin, Double Eleven, and Sperasoft (who are responsible for Fallout 76). This makes it all the more likely that the successful applicant will be working on content for Starfield.
WHAT COULD A MULTIPLAYER MODE LOOK LIKE?
If Starfield does indeed get a multiplayer mode, what could it look like? Bethesda has a wealth of experience in creating massive, open world games, and they’ve already shown with Fallout 76 that they can create an online experience that’s both engaging and rewarding.
One possibility is that Starfield could feature a co-op mode, where players can team up to explore the vast reaches of space together. Alternatively, Bethesda could opt for a more traditional PvP multiplayer mode, where players can battle it out in space combat or on the surface of various planets.
Ultimately, we won’t know for sure what Bethesda has planned for Starfield’s future until the game is released. But with the company actively seeking a developer with experience in open world multiplayer games, it’s clear that they have big plans for the game’s future.
